Shillong, June 19: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman emphasized on Friday that the Northeast has the potential to become a key growth driver for India by leveraging its strengths in sustainable agriculture and high-quality organic products.

During her speech at the inauguration of the largest organic spice processing facility in the Northeast, operated by the Eastern Ri-Bhoi Organic Farmer Producer Company Ltd in Lumdaitkhla, she stated that the future of agriculture will prioritize quality over sheer quantity.

"Agriculture's future will not belong to those who produce the most, but to those who produce the best—cleaner, more traceable, and premium products," she remarked.

She pointed out that Meghalaya should not feel pressured to compete with larger agricultural states based on production volume.

"When farmers in Meghalaya thrive, the entire Northeast flourishes. And as the Northeast progresses, it becomes a new engine for India's growth," she stated, commending the Meghalaya government, women’s groups, and entrepreneurs for their contributions to the organic farming sector.

Highlighting Meghalaya's competitive edge, Sitharaman noted that the future will increasingly favor trusted quality and reliable producers, positioning the state to capitalize on the rising global demand for premium organic goods.

Meghalaya's Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, welcomed the new facility, calling it a significant advancement for the state's organic agriculture landscape.

He highlighted that Meghalaya's Lakadong turmeric, ginger, and black pepper have gained acclaim both nationally and internationally for their superior quality.

"This advanced processing facility is a crucial step towards enhancing our organic agriculture ecosystem by increasing value addition, improving market access, and ensuring better returns for our farmers," the Chief Minister noted in a social media update.

Sangma added that the facility will help connect farm production with commercial markets, creating new growth opportunities, livelihoods, and sustainable prosperity in one of Meghalaya's vital agricultural sectors.

Earlier, on Thursday evening, Sitharaman arrived at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati for her two-day visit to the region.

She was welcomed by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Assam Finance Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah.
