NorthEast United FC Coach Raises Concerns Over Durand Cup Schedule
Concerns About Player Health
NorthEast United FC head coach Juan Pedro Benali
GUWAHATI, May 20: Juan Pedro Benali, the head coach of NorthEast United FC, has expressed his worries regarding the timing of the Durand Cup. He believes that playing matches in the extreme heat and humidity of July and August poses a significant risk to players' health.
Challenges Faced in the Previous Season
The Indian Super League season was challenging for many teams, with reports of delayed salaries and a shortened schedule, limiting each team to just 13 matches. NorthEast United concluded their season with a 2-0 victory over Mohammedan SC, finishing ninth in the standings with 16 points.
Durand Cup's Historical Significance
As the Durand Cup is set to kick off the next season, Benali has raised alarms about the tournament's scheduling. Established in 1888, it is recognized as Asia's oldest football tournament and the second-oldest globally. Under Benali's guidance, NorthEast United has claimed victory in the last two editions of this prestigious competition.
Health Risks in Extreme Weather
“Starting the Durand Cup so early is not advisable. Teams may not be mentally prepared, especially during July and August when the weather is extremely hot. Playing matches at 2 pm or 3 pm can be hazardous. With humidity levels at 80-85 percent and temperatures reaching 34-35 degrees, it poses serious health risks for players,” the 57-year-old coach stated after the final ISL match.
Appreciation for the Durand Cup
Benali emphasized his admiration for the Durand Cup and the organizers, stating, “I love the Durand Cup and the people behind it. They treat us exceptionally well. However, as professionals, we must prioritize safety.”
A Call for Unity in Indian Football
He also called for collaboration among all stakeholders in Indian football following a tumultuous season marked by delays due to uncertainties between the All India Football Federation and Football Sports Development Limited.
“We need to move on from this season. It’s essential to rectify the issues. When I say ‘we,’ I refer to Indian football as a whole, not just NorthEast United,” he remarked.
Learning from Past Mistakes
“Clarity is crucial. We must not act selfishly. This includes everyone: myself, journalists, fans, players, clubs, owners, AIFF, and broadcasters. We need to unite during these challenging times,” he added.
“Let’s learn from our mistakes and from other nations. India is a vast country with immense potential in various fields, and we must harness that to improve our football.”
Reflecting on the Season
Despite facing numerous challenges, including the loan departure of key players like Alaaeddine Ajaraie, Benali expressed pride in his players' dedication throughout the season.
“There were many positives and some negatives, but I will remember the loyalty and honor shown by my players. Even when results were not favorable, they gave their all, maintained a positive attitude, and persevered,” he noted.
A Memorable Celebration
Benali also shared the story behind his exuberant celebration after Dinesh Singh scored the second goal against Mohammedan SC, where he removed his shirt in excitement.
“I promised Dinesh that if he scored, I would celebrate that way. A man keeps his word. It may not be conventional, but it was a special moment in the last game,” he concluded.
