Northeast India Infrastructure Summit 2026 Kicks Off in Shillong

The Northeast India Infrastructure Summit 2026 has commenced in Shillong, bringing together over 800 delegates to discuss growth opportunities in the region. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari emphasized the government's commitment to infrastructure development, promising significant improvements in connectivity. Meghalaya's Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma, highlighted the region's transformation and its ambitions to attract investors. The summit aims to address strategic investments in various sectors, including hospitality and transportation, concluding with discussions on infrastructure-led growth. This event marks a pivotal moment for the Northeast as it seeks to establish itself as a key player in India's economic landscape.

Shillong, Jun 15: The two-day North East India Infrastructure Summit and Exhibition (NEIINFRA) 2026 commenced in Shillong on Monday, featuring Union Minister Nitin Gadkari alongside the chief ministers of Meghalaya and Nagaland at the opening session.


Summit Highlights

This event, taking place at the Lariti International Centre for Performing Arts and Culture from June 15-16, has attracted over 800 delegates, including policymakers, industry leaders, and more than 60 exhibitors, all focused on exploring new opportunities and future projects in the region.


During his address, Gadkari reaffirmed the central government's dedication to advancing the Northeast, stating, "We are committed to ensuring the region's progress is on par with other states." He unveiled several road infrastructure initiatives, asserting that these developments would act as a catalyst for growth. He promised that on his next visit to Shillong, travel to Guwahati airport would take just an hour.


Regional Development and Investment

Prior to the summit's opening, Gadkari participated in a CEO roundtable and inaugurated an exhibition showcasing various companies.


Meghalaya's Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma, expressed optimism for the region, stating that the Northeast is now "daring to dream," a sentiment aimed at attracting potential investors. He highlighted the significant growth in Meghalaya's budget over the past eight years, with capital expenditure increasing sixfold.


Sangma also mentioned that Meghalaya will host the National Games next year and is constructing a FIFA-certified football stadium with a capacity of 40,000, valued at around Rs 800 crore.


Infrastructure Developments

On the hospitality front, Sangma noted the addition of two five-star hotels in the last five years, with plans for eight more, four of which are already under construction.


He also announced the reopening of Shillong airport, which is expected to resume full commercial operations within the next 12 to 18 months.


Strategic Importance of the Northeast

Meghalaya's Chief Secretary, Shakil P Ahammed, referred to the summit as a "historic moment" for the region, emphasizing its transformation from a remote area to a burgeoning hub of prosperity.


Participants at the summit highlighted the Northeast's strategic role as India's gateway to Southeast Asia, advocating for ongoing investments in infrastructure, logistics, urban development, renewable energy, and digital connectivity.


The summit will conclude on Tuesday with discussions focused on thematic topics, business interactions, and policy considerations aimed at fostering infrastructure-led growth throughout the Northeast.
