Guwahati, June 18: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has positioned itself as a pivotal force in the socio-economic advancement of the region over the last 12 years, showcasing significant improvements in railway infrastructure, connectivity, electrification, and passenger services.

“With increased budget allocations, which have surged nearly five times from an average of Rs 2,122 crore during 2009-14 to Rs 11,486 crore in 2026-27, NFR has expedited railway development throughout the region. Railway electrification, which was nearly non-existent prior to 2014, now encompasses over 95 percent of the network, with more than 4,170 route kilometers (RKM) electrified, facilitating quicker, greener, and more efficient train operations,” stated NFR Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Kapinjal Kishore Sharma.

He further noted that NFR has constructed over 2,000 km of new railway tracks, including new lines and doubling projects, while enhancing rail connectivity to the capitals of Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, and Mizoram.

Key strategic initiatives in Sikkim, Nagaland, and Manipur are advancing steadily and are expected to further bolster connectivity across the region, Sharma mentioned.

“Passenger convenience has significantly improved through the redevelopment of stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, the introduction of modern train services like Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat Sleeper, and the enhancement of amenities such as lifts, escalators, digital ticketing systems, and upgraded station infrastructure,” he added.

NFR is also engaged in transformative projects, including the construction of a new rail-cum-road bridge adjacent to the old Saraighat Bridge in Guwahati and a Wagon Periodic Overhauling Workshop in Basbari, Kokrajhar.

“Additionally, NFR is enhancing international connectivity through the Banarhat-Samtse and Kokrajhar-Gelephu rail links with Bhutan, which will promote cross-border trade and economic development in the region. The zone has also initiated several innovative measures in safety, freight development, and environmental conservation. Over 500 Road Over Bridges (ROBs) and Road Under Bridges (RUBs) have been built, AI-based elephant intrusion detection systems have been implemented, and unique canopy bridges for hoolock gibbons have been constructed,” Sharma concluded.
