Nominations for Rajya Sabha Elections Commence
Guwahati, Mar 5: The nomination process for the upcoming biennial Rajya Sabha elections kicked off on Thursday, with candidates vying for 37 seats in the Upper House nationwide. This day marked the final opportunity for candidates to submit their nominations.
In Assam, BJP representatives Jogen Mohan and Terash Gowala presented their nomination papers to the returning officer at the Assam Legislative Assembly in Guwahati.
Additionally, Pramod Boro, the chief of the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), also filed his nomination for the third available seat in the city.
The three candidates from the NDA submitted their papers in the presence of Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
“We have all submitted our nominations today, and the scrutiny will occur tomorrow at 11 am. Over the last decade, my efforts in my constituency have paved the way for my current roles in the Assembly and now in the Rajya Sabha. My responsibilities have significantly increased for the state,” Mohan stated.
Mohan, who serves as the state cabinet minister for Transport, Hill Area Development, and Indigenous and Tribal Faith, represents the Mahmora Assembly constituency.
Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulated the nominees and expressed optimism that all three would win without contest in the forthcoming elections.
"I am confident that the three seats will be won uncontested. I will not be present for the nomination filing as I will be in Dhemaji for the Jana Aaashirbad yatra," he mentioned to the media during a joining event at Vajpayee Bhawan in Guwahati.
Meanwhile, Gowala, representing the Duliajan Assembly constituency, arrived at the Assembly on a bicycle to submit his nomination. He indicated that he was following his party's directives.
“In line with my party’s decision, I am filing my nomination for the Rajya Sabha. Preparations for the upcoming elections in Duliajan are also in full swing. My party's guidance ensures that Assam remains my primary focus,” Gowala remarked.
UPPL leader Boro expressed hope for support from Assembly members during the election for the third seat. “I have submitted my nomination for the third seat and anticipate backing from leaders of various parties during the election,” Boro stated.
The terms of three Rajya Sabha members from Assam, including BJP leaders Bhubaneswar Kalita and Rameswar Teli, along with opposition-supported Independent Ajit Kumar Bhuyan, will conclude on April 9.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced on February 18 the schedule for the biennial elections to fill 37 vacancies across 10 states. These seats are becoming vacant as the terms of the current members are set to end in April 2026.
According to the official schedule, polling is slated for March 16, from 9 am to 4 pm, with vote counting scheduled for 5 pm on the same day.
Nomination paper scrutiny will take place on March 6, and March 9 is the deadline for candidates to withdraw their nominations.
