Nitin Gadkari Addresses Concerns Over Illegal Immigration in Assam
Gadkari's Stance on Illegal Immigration
On April 2, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari emphasized that the actions taken by the Assam government against illegal immigrants should not be associated with the Muslim community. He reiterated the party's position against granting voting rights to Bangladeshi nationals who have entered Assam, citing national interest. In a conversation with a news media outlet, Gadkari criticized the opposition for politicizing the issue, accusing them of engaging in "vote bank politics" and prioritizing their political agendas over the nation's welfare.
Global Context and Political Implications
Gadkari pointed out that countries worldwide take action against individuals who enter illegally, stressing that this issue should not be linked to any religion. He clarified that he does not oppose Muslims residing in Assam but believes that allowing voting rights to Bangladeshi citizens is inappropriate. He condemned certain parties for using this matter to further their electoral interests, stating that it is wrong to exploit national issues for political gain.
Assam Elections and Development Initiatives
Ahead of the assembly elections, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the BJP have consistently highlighted illegal immigration as a factor affecting the state's demographic structure. Gadkari expressed confidence in the BJP's success in the upcoming Assam assembly elections, referencing the infrastructure development undertaken by Prime Minister Modi's government since 2014. He stated, "I am confident that the people of Assam will once again elect the BJP with a significant majority due to the changes witnessed since 2014."
Infrastructure Development in the Northeast
He noted that after Modi became Prime Minister, a focus was placed on infrastructure development in the Northeast. Today, the region boasts improved roads, 11-12 bridges over the Brahmaputra, airports, waterways, and railways. As people's aspirations are being met, there is a growing positivity and support for development, which he believes will lead to favorable voting outcomes for the BJP. Voting for all 126 assembly seats in Assam is scheduled for April 9, with counting set for May 4. The NDA aims for a third consecutive term, while Congress seeks to reclaim power by defeating the ruling party.
