Niraj Kumar's Remarkable Achievement

World Cup gold medalist Niraj Kumar recently showcased his talent at the 68th National Shooting Championships held in Bhopal, where he clinched a silver medal in the Men's 50m 3P category. Reflecting on his career, Kumar discussed the changing dynamics of shooting with the introduction of the Shooting League of India (SLI).

A Story of Determination

Kumar's rise from a small town in Hoshiarpur, Punjab, to national recognition exemplifies the determination needed in competitive sports. His journey began in 2014 with the National Cadet Corps (NCC), where he faced numerous financial challenges and spent years persuading his parents to support his shooting ambitions. His selection for the Indian Navy marked a pivotal moment, gaining his family's backing for his career.

Impact of the Shooting League of India

Kumar believes that the SLI will eliminate many barriers for aspiring young shooters. He feels that the league will instill confidence in parents, encouraging them to view shooting as a legitimate career option for their children. The inaugural season is set to commence in February this year.

"Families often support a child's sporting aspirations only after witnessing success stories. The Shooting League of India will create these success narratives, helping the public recognize the potential of this sport," Kumar stated. He added, "Traditionally, our audience has been limited to those familiar with shooting, but the league's broadcasts will broaden this audience, allowing more people to appreciate the sport."

Anticipation for Global Collaboration

A key highlight for Kumar is the league's potential to connect local athletes with international stars. He expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity to train and compete alongside renowned figures, specifically mentioning Hungarian World Champion Istvan Peni and fellow Indian shooter Kiran Jadhav. "I look forward to shooting with Istvan Peni and Kiran Jadhav. It would be fantastic if we could team up," Kumar shared.

Training Facilities and National Success

Discussing his recent achievements and the preparation that led to his success, Kumar praised the facilities at national training centers. "I didn't adhere to a strict regimen for the championships, but the infrastructure at the Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range is outstanding. We have hostel accommodations, three meals daily, and access to training ammunition, which is a significant benefit," he noted.

Friendship in Competition

Despite the fierce competition among Indian shooters, Kumar emphasized the importance of maintaining friendships and separating professional rivalries. "Shooting is an individual sport that requires focus on personal performance. We don't dwell on each other, which is a positive aspect of our sport," he explained. "We interact, socialize, and everything is harmonious. There’s no negativity at the range."

Olympic Aspirations Ahead

As he gears up for the 2026 season, Kumar's primary ambition remains to secure an Olympic medal. He views the Shooting League of India as more than just a competition; it represents a vital ecosystem that will enhance athlete performance and build audience support for the sport.
