Itanagar, Sept 6: The National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports (NIMAS) based in Dirang has successfully completed a remarkable expedition, achieving the first ascent of 20 previously unclimbed peaks in Ladakh, all exceeding 6,000 meters, within a span of just 23 days.
Under the leadership of Col Ranveer Singh Jamwal, the Director of NIMAS, this expedition marks a significant achievement in the realm of Indian mountaineering, showcasing the prowess of an institution from Arunachal Pradesh.
The team included several skilled mountaineers from Arunachal Pradesh, such as Lobsang Tenzin Bapu, Dorjee Khandu, Tenzing Dawa, Tashi Marakpa, Dorjee Tsering, Sangey Tsering, Kon Tsering, Sang Khandu, and Leki Passang.
Col Jamwal, who boasts over 20 years of mountaineering experience and has led more than 80 expeditions, is notably the only Indian to have summited Mount Everest three times, completed the Seven Summits challenge, and reached the highest peaks in all 28 Indian states.
His leadership has propelled NIMAS to broaden its expedition and adventure sports initiatives, creating enhanced opportunities for the youth in the region. This latest achievement in Ladakh further solidifies the institute's reputation as a premier training center for adventure sports and expeditions in India.
NIMAS, situated in Dirang within the West Kameng district, operates under the Ministry of Defence and provides training and expedition activities across various adventure disciplines, including land, air, and water-based sports.
