Significant Arrest in Jiribam Case

Cachar, August 1: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has apprehended Thanglienlal Hmar, also known as Boya, who is identified as the main conspirator behind the tragic Jiribam incident involving the deaths of three women and three children. This arrest occurred during a collaborative operation conducted by the NIA alongside Assam Police in the Cachar district of Assam.

As per an official statement released by the NIA on Thursday, Boya, who resides in Moinathol Dilkshosh Ghaat, was captured based on crucial intelligence gathered by the team.

Authorities recovered a mobile phone and a SIM card from him. Investigations have indicated that Boya played a significant role in both the planning and execution of the heinous act that transpired in the Borebekra region of Jiribam district, Manipur, on November 11, 2024.

During this horrific event, militants abducted and subsequently murdered three women and three children, with their remains later discarded into the Barak river. The NIA has taken over the investigation, which was initially registered as RC-15/2024/NIA/IMP, from the Borebekra police and has been diligently following leads for several months.

In related developments, the Manipur High Court, which is closely overseeing the case, has raised concerns regarding the delays in the submission of the chargesheet.

In a recent court session, the NIA was granted a final one-month extension to provide a comprehensive report in accordance with Section 173 of the CrPC and the relevant provisions of the BNSS Act, 2023.

The counsel for the Centre presented two sealed progress reports to the bench, suggesting that the investigation is approaching its conclusion. However, the court cautioned that any further postponements would be taken very seriously.

The next hearing for this case is scheduled for August 28.
