NHRC Takes Action After HIV Cases Linked to Blood Transfusion in Madhya Pradesh
NHRC Issues Notice Following HIV Cases in Children
New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) announced on Friday that it has sent notices to all states and Union territories following the alarming case of six children testing positive for HIV after receiving blood transfusions at a hospital in Satna district, Madhya Pradesh earlier this year.
The NHRC stated, "Given that similar incidents have been reported across various regions, we have requested detailed reports from the chief secretaries of all states and Union territories within four weeks regarding this matter."
These reports should outline the actions taken or planned to address the situation, according to the Commission.
In response to the incident, the Madhya Pradesh government has suspended the head of the blood bank and two laboratory technicians linked to the case, as confirmed by a senior official.
This decision was made following a preliminary investigation by a committee set up to look into the matter.
The NHRC has taken notice of a media report indicating that at least six children tested HIV positive after blood transfusions at the Satna district hospital.
These children were reportedly undergoing treatment for thalassemia, a condition that necessitates regular blood transfusions.
The HIV positive cases were identified between January and May of this year, but the issue has only recently come to public attention.
According to a media report from December 16, state authorities are investigating whether similar blood transfusion issues have occurred in other hospitals as well. The hospital has begun its own internal inquiry into the situation.
