NHRC Takes Action Following Disturbing Reports

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Chief of Police in Uttar Pradesh following reports of the alleged kidnapping and gang rape of a minor girl in Kanpur earlier this month. This information was confirmed by the commission.

According to a statement from the NHRC, one of the accused is reportedly a sub-inspector with the Uttar Pradesh Police.

The commission stated that it has taken cognizance of media reports regarding the abduction and sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl in Kanpur on January 5.

Upon reviewing the situation, the NHRC noted that if the facts presented in the reports are accurate, it raises serious concerns regarding human rights violations. Consequently, the commission has requested a detailed report from the Director General of Police (DGP) of Uttar Pradesh within two weeks.

Reports that surfaced in the media on January 10 indicated that the girl was allegedly abducted from near her home on the night of January 5 and taken to a location near the railway tracks, where she was subjected to gang rape by two individuals.
