NHAI Seeks Action to Improve Mobile Connectivity on National Highways
NHAI Requests Telecom Authorities for Enhanced Connectivity
New Delhi, Jan 6: The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has reached out to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) for assistance in resolving the lack of mobile network coverage along various segments of National Highways.
In a thorough evaluation, NHAI identified 424 sites spanning approximately 1,750 km of the National Highway network that are critically impacted by poor mobile connectivity.
According to NHAI, comprehensive details regarding these locations have been compiled and submitted to the DoT and TRAI for prompt action.
Highlighting the importance of public safety and the strategic role of the National Highway network, NHAI has urged for a swift and coordinated effort to enhance mobile connectivity along these corridors nationwide.
“The National Highway routes pass through remote and rural regions, where the lack of reliable mobile coverage negatively affects highway operations, emergency response, and the provision of technology-driven public services,” stated the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
Additionally, NHAI has asked TRAI to direct telecom providers to send proactive SMS or Flash SMS alerts at geo-mapped accident-prone areas, including sections affected by stray cattle and other identified risks.
The ministry added that these alerts aim to inform drivers before they reach such locations, promoting timely caution and safer driving practices.
A list of accident-prone areas frequently impacted by stray cattle has also been provided to TRAI.
“By addressing the gaps in mobile connectivity and enhancing safety measures on National Highways, NHAI reaffirms its dedication to collaborating closely with all relevant stakeholders to ensure that the National Highway network is not only well-connected physically but also digitally equipped,” an official statement noted.
