Strengthening US-India Relations

New Delhi, Jan 12: In a move aimed at mending the frayed relationship between the United States and India, the newly appointed ambassador, Sergio Gor, stated on Monday that India holds a pivotal role for the US.

During his inaugural speech, Gor extended an invitation to India to join a US-led strategic initiative called “Pax Silica,” focusing on critical minerals and artificial intelligence.

"We have a unique opportunity to reshape diplomacy, potentially creating the most significant global partnership of our time," Gor expressed to the staff at the US embassy.

He added, “India is our most crucial partner. My ambition as ambassador is to pursue an extensive agenda, working together as genuine strategic allies, each contributing strength, respect, and leadership.”

At 38, Gor highlighted the genuine friendship between President Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which he believes will aid in addressing the current tensions that have marked the worst period in bilateral relations over the past twenty years.

His remarks, made shortly after assuming office, are perceived as a positive outreach from the Trump administration, which has recently exerted pressure on India regarding tariffs and H1B visa policies.

The downturn in relations began when Trump imposed a 50% tariff on India, including an additional 25% duty on India's imports of Russian crude oil.

In addition to tariffs, various other issues have strained relations, including Trump's assertion of resolving the India-Pakistan conflict last May and the new immigration policies from Washington.

"The bond between the United States and India is not only based on mutual interests but is also a relationship upheld at the highest levels. True friends may have disagreements, but they ultimately find resolutions," he remarked.

Gor also mentioned ongoing discussions regarding a bilateral trade agreement, following comments from Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick indicating a lack of urgency from Washington to finalize the deal soon.

While discussing trade, he recalled Secretary of State Marco Rubio's statement that this year would be characterized by "reciprocity."

"Many of you have inquired about the status of the trade negotiations. Both parties are actively engaged, with the next trade call scheduled for tomorrow,” Gor noted.

However, he did not specify whether this would involve a phone call between the trade negotiators from both nations. After his address, Gor did not take any questions from the audience or the few invited journalists.

Gor also mentioned the 'Pax Silica' initiative launched by the US last month, which has already seen participation from Japan, South Korea, the UK, Israel, and several other countries.

"I am excited to announce that India will be invited to join this coalition as a full member next month. As the world embraces new technologies, it is crucial for India and the United States to collaborate from the outset of this initiative," he concluded.
