New Traffic Regulations in Bihar: Enhanced Enforcement and Awareness Initiatives

Traffic Enforcement Changes in Bihar

In Bihar, only officers of the rank of daroga or higher will have the authority to stop vehicles, issue fines, or take any other enforcement actions during vehicle checks. This announcement was made by the Additional Director General of Police (Traffic), Sudhanshu Kumar, during a press conference held at the Sardar Patel Bhawan in the police headquarters on Friday.

He further stated that if a vehicle driver presents documents through DigiLocker or any other online platform, these will be considered valid, provided the documents are authentic and genuine. The ADG also mandated that all personnel on traffic duty must wear body-worn cameras. Any vehicle checks or enforcement actions conducted without the camera activated will be deemed inappropriate.

Sudhanshu Kumar explained that traffic monitoring will be conducted from the Integrated Command and Control Center (ICCC) located at Gandhi Maidan in Patna. In the event of traffic jams or other issues, traffic police or the Quick Response Team (QRT) stationed nearby will be promptly informed to restore normalcy.

He highlighted that due to a lack of awareness regarding the Prime Minister's relief scheme, many individuals are not fully benefiting from it. Under this scheme, cashless treatment of up to ₹1.5 lakh can be availed for individuals injured in road accidents at designated hospitals. It is essential to notify the call center or local police station within 24 hours of the accident to access this benefit. So far, only 82 individuals in Bihar have utilized this cashless treatment scheme due to insufficient information.

The ADG mentioned that in compliance with the Supreme Court's directives, Motor Accident Claims Tribunals (MACT) have been established in all districts to provide compensation to road accident victims. To date, compensation has been awarded to 1,972 individuals across 3,339 cases.

He also noted that efforts are underway to streamline traffic management in Patna and other major cities in the state by coordinating with municipal corporations and other relevant agencies to remove encroachments from key roads and pedestrian-free zones. Special instructions have been issued to police personnel to ensure auto drivers adhere to traffic regulations, and training has been provided to police officers to enhance traffic operations.
