New Rules Established for National Sports Board Selection Process

The Union government has officially introduced the National Sports Board (Search-cum-Selection Committee) Rules 2026, which will guide the selection of board members. This initiative, part of the National Sports Governance Act, aims to enhance governance in sports by establishing a committee led by the Cabinet Secretary. The committee will recommend candidates for key positions based on their integrity and expertise in relevant fields. The National Sports Board will oversee the recognition of National Sports Bodies and ensure compliance with ethical and financial standards, marking a significant step in sports governance.
 

Introduction of New Rules

On Thursday, the Union government announced the implementation of the National Sports Board (Search-cum-Selection Committee) Rules 2026, as part of the National Sports Governance Act, 2025, according to the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.


Committee Structure and Responsibilities

The newly issued notification grants the Central Government the authority to form a Search-cum-Selection Committee. This committee will be led by the Cabinet Secretary and will include the Secretary of Sports, an individual experienced in sports administration, and two national sports award recipients. Its primary responsibility will be to propose candidates for the roles of Chairperson and two board members, selecting individuals who possess integrity, capability, and relevant experience in public administration, sports governance, sports law, and related areas.


Functions of the National Sports Board

The National Sports Board (Search-cum-Selection Committee) Rules, 2026 will initiate the selection process for the Chairperson and Members of the National Sports Board. This board will serve as the principal authority for recognizing National Sports Bodies and ensuring adherence to governance, financial, and ethical standards.
