Uttar Pradesh Implements New Egg Labeling Regulations

Starting April 1, the Uttar Pradesh government has mandated that all egg producers must clearly label the production and expiration dates on their products. According to the new regulations, poultry farmers and suppliers are required to ensure consumer safety by marking each egg with these crucial details. Reports indicate that any trader or producer failing to comply with this rule may face the destruction of their eggs or have them declared unfit for human consumption.

Consumer Awareness and Safety

Officials in Lucknow have stated that this initiative aims to assist consumers in determining the freshness of eggs at the time of purchase. This will enable buyers to make informed choices and avoid consuming stale eggs. Research suggests that eggs can remain edible for up to two weeks when stored at approximately 30 degrees Celsius. However, if kept refrigerated between 2 degrees Celsius and 8 degrees Celsius, their shelf life can extend to five weeks.

Challenges in Cold Storage Facilities

According to food safety and drug administration regulations, due to varying temperature requirements, eggs cannot be stored alongside vegetables. Unfortunately, Uttar Pradesh faces a shortage of cold storage facilities, with only two available for eggs—one in Agra and another in Jhansi. Mukesh Meshram, the Additional Chief Secretary of the Animal Husbandry and Dairy Department, noted that recent inspections revealed many egg vendors were not adhering to the regulations, prompting this new measure. He emphasized that eggs were being sold without proper checks, leaving consumers uninformed about their quality or freshness.
