Khap Panchayat's New Decisions in Baghpat

In a recent gathering held on Saturday in Baghpat district, Uttar Pradesh, the Khap Panchayat made significant decisions regarding youth conduct. They imposed a ban on minors owning smartphones and wearing half pants in public areas. Additionally, the Panchayat raised concerns about weddings being held in banquet halls, insisting that such ceremonies should take place in villages and homes.

The Khap leaders advocated for traditional attire, suggesting kurta-pajama for boys and salwar-kurta for girls. Chaudhary Brijpal Singh and Chaudhary Subhash, representatives from the Thamba Patti Mehr Desh Khap, shared insights about the Panchayat's resolutions, emphasizing that both boys and girls should be treated equally in society, with discipline rules applying to both.

The assembly expressed that boys wearing half pants in public contradicts social norms and could negatively impact society. They clarified that providing smartphones to boys under 18 is inappropriate.

Regarding marriage-related decisions, the Panchayat argued that weddings held in banquet halls weaken family ties and can lead to stress in marital relationships. Therefore, they insisted that marriages should occur in villages and homes. However, they agreed to accept wedding invitations via WhatsApp.

Khap leaders indicated that they would engage with community leaders in various villages to implement these decisions. They aim to promote these resolutions across Uttar Pradesh and collaborate with other Khaps to turn this into a broader movement.

Expressing concern over the rising use of smartphones, the Khap leaders noted that very few children utilize mobile devices for educational purposes, while most are distracted, affecting their studies and leading to a disregard for elders' advice.

They stated that while there are no objections to attire at home, wearing modest and simple clothing in public is socially necessary. In response to these developments, senior Congress leader Chaudhary Yashpal Singh supported the Panchayat's decisions, highlighting that Khap Panchayats make choices based on societal realities and aim to guide youth positively.

Yashpal Singh emphasized the growing need for discipline and social values among children and youth today. Rajkumar Sangwan, a Member of Parliament from Baghpat, echoed these concerns, stating that the Khap leaders' worries are valid. He stressed the importance of maintaining social values and culture, which strengthen the nation and society. Sangwan acknowledged the continuous efforts of Khap leaders to connect youth with cultural values, advocating for respect towards their viewpoints.
