Palasbari, Aug 4: A new mobile application named Helpmonk has been introduced to facilitate connections between individuals impacted by natural disasters and those providing assistance, including rescuers, volunteers, NGOs, government bodies, and donors, all through a unified digital platform.

Focus on Assam's Flood Crisis

The app will initially address the ongoing flood crisis in Assam, but its creators have designed it for broader applications during various emergencies such as earthquakes, cyclones, landslides, cloudbursts, fires, and more across India.

Features of Helpmonk

Helpmonk allows users to share their location, photos, current conditions, and urgent needs, enabling volunteers, relief organizations, and donors to pinpoint those requiring help and coordinate their efforts effectively.

According to Firingoti, the initiative behind the app, Helpmonk aims to assist in multiple phases of disaster management, including emergency response, rescue missions, distribution of relief, rehabilitation, and long-term recovery.

Inception and Development

Anuj Kumar Boruah, co-founder of Firingoti and the brain behind Helpmonk, emphasized that the current flood situation in Assam, particularly affecting regions like Sivasagar, Charaideo, Nazira, Jorhat, Golaghat, and Dergaon, underscored the necessity for a platform that links those in distress with potential helpers. “Helpmonk was conceived from this necessity,” Boruah stated.

The app was created by Dikshit Rajkhowa, a tech expert from New Delhi with roots in Assam. Rajkhowa mentioned that the initial version of the app was developed in under a week due to the urgent need arising from the floods. The platform features geo-tagging, location sharing, image uploads, verification processes, and real-time updates.

Humanitarian Initiative

Sangeeta Barooah Pisharoty, another co-founder of Firingoti, described Helpmonk as a humanitarian effort that is free for users. She noted that the platform could also serve as a valuable resource for journalists, researchers, policymakers, and relief organizations during crises.

The developers have plans for future enhancements, which may include volunteer management, shelter mapping, assistance for missing persons, tracking of relief supplies, integration of emergency helplines, monitoring of rehabilitation efforts, and disaster analytics.
