Investigation Update on Nancy Guthrie's Case

Recent findings have shed light on the ongoing search for Nancy Guthrie, whose case took a turn when a bone found near her Tucson residence was determined to be over 750 years old and unrelated to her disappearance. Nancy, 84, the mother of Savannah Guthrie, has been missing since authorities reported her abduction on February 1. She was last seen at her home in the Catalina Foothills on the evening of January 31.

On May 7, livestreamer Alec Wysopal stumbled upon what seemed to be a human leg bone while exploring hiking trails near Guthrie's home in search of clues. After discovering the bone, he promptly alerted emergency services. This discovery led to speculation online regarding a potential connection to the missing persons case. However, police later clarified that the bone was not related to the investigation. The Tucson Police Department stated, "The bone found near Craycroft and River was confirmed to be human. This will be a prehistoric anthropological investigation." They noted that the University of Arizona's Anthropology Department and the Pima County Office of the Medical Examiner were involved, emphasizing that this is not a criminal matter.

James T. Watson, curator of bioarchaeology at the Arizona State Museum, informed The New York Times that the remains date back to between AD 650 and 1250. Wysopal recorded himself touching the bone with a hiking pole before realizing the area was believed to be an ancient Native American burial site. He later expressed regret, stating he would have avoided the location had he known its significance. Watson remarked, "Whether it's Nancy Guthrie or an ancient individual, you shouldn't be poking at them with a stick. It's common decency. Would you do that with your grandmother's remains?" Despite a reward exceeding $1 million for information, the case of Guthrie's disappearance remains unresolved. The FBI has released surveillance footage and images of a masked individual near the 84-year-old's home, but no suspects have been publicly identified.
