New Appointments in Indian Defence Leadership

In a significant reshuffle, the Indian government has appointed Lt Gen NS Raja Subramani as the new Chief of Defence Staff, succeeding General Anil Chauhan. Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan will take over as Chief of Naval Staff. These appointments come as the country aims to enhance military operational synergy through theatre command reforms. Lt Gen Subramani brings over four decades of experience, while Vice Admiral Swaminathan has a strong background in communication and electronic warfare. New Delhi, May 9: The Indian government has appointed former Vice Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen NS Raja Subramani, as the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), taking over from General Anil Chauhan, whose term concludes on May 30.


Additionally, Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan has been designated as the next Chief of the Naval Staff, succeeding Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, who is due to retire on May 31.


According to a statement from the Defence Ministry, Lt Gen Subramani will also assume the role of Secretary for the Department of Military Affairs. He is currently serving as a Military Adviser at the National Security Council Secretariat.


Previously, Lt Gen Subramani held the position of Vice Chief of the Army Staff from July 2024 to July 2025, after leading the Army’s Central Command from March 2023 to June 2024.


As the highest-ranking military officer in the country, he is anticipated to lead the long-awaited theatre command reforms, which aim to improve operational collaboration among the Army, Navy, and Air Force through integrated military commands.


Commissioned into the 8th Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles on December 14, 1985, Lt Gen Subramani is a graduate of the National Defence Academy and the Indian Military Academy.


He has furthered his education at the Joint Services Command and Staff College in Bracknell, UK, and the National Defence College in New Delhi.


He holds a Master of Arts from King’s College London and an MPhil in Defence Studies from Madras University.


With a career spanning over 40 years, he has undertaken various command, staff, and instructional roles across diverse operational environments.


Notably, he commanded the 16 Garhwal Rifles during counter-insurgency operations in Assam under Operation Rhino and has led formations in Jammu and Kashmir as well as the central sector. He has also commanded two Corps, including the Army’s elite strike Corps on the western front.


On the other hand, Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, who is currently the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command, has been appointed as the next Navy Chief. He was commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1987, and specializes in communication and electronic warfare.


Vice Admiral Swaminathan is also an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakvasla, the Joint Services Command and Staff College in the UK, the College of Naval Warfare at Karanja, and the US Naval War College at Newport.


A recipient of the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, and Vishisht Seva Medal, he has held numerous significant operational, staff, and training roles throughout his naval career.


He has commanded several frontline warships, including missile vessels INS Vidyut and INS Vinash, as well as missile corvette INS Kulish.
