New Appointment of Shatrujeet Singh Kapoor as ITBP Chief
Shatrujeet Singh Kapoor Takes Charge as ITBP Director General
On Wednesday, Shatrujeet Singh Kapoor, the former Director General of Police in Haryana, was appointed as the Director General of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). This force is responsible for securing India's border with China.
According to an order from the Ministry of Personnel, Kapoor will succeed Praveen Kumar, the current head of ITBP, who has been appointed as the new Director General of the Border Security Force (BSF).
Kapoor, an officer from the 1990 batch of the Indian Police Service (IPS) from the Haryana cadre, was placed on leave last October following the controversy surrounding the alleged suicide of IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar. At that time, he was serving as the Director General of Police (DGP) in Haryana.
Puran, an officer from the 2001 batch of IPS, reportedly took his own life on October 7. In an alleged eight-page 'final note', he accused Kapoor and several senior officials of "caste-based discrimination, mental harassment, public humiliation, and oppression." Last month, the Haryana government relieved Kapoor from his position as the state's DGP.
The Cabinet Appointment Committee has approved Kapoor's appointment as the ITBP Director General until October 31, 2026, which coincides with his retirement date. The current ITBP chief, Praveen Kumar, an officer from the 1993 batch of IPS from the West Bengal cadre, has been appointed as the Director General of BSF until September 30, 2030.
Kumar has been holding additional charge of the BSF Director General since November 30, following the retirement of Daljit Singh Choudhary. The BSF primarily manages the security of India's borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh.
