Nepal's Home Minister Resigns Amid Financial Allegations
Resignation of Home Minister Sudan Gurung
Kathmandu, Apr 23: Sudan Gurung, the Home Minister of Nepal, submitted his resignation on Wednesday, just over three weeks after taking office, following allegations concerning his financial dealings.
Gurung gained significant attention when he imprisoned former Prime Minister K P Oli and the previous Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak within a day of assuming his role.
His resignation, which comes after his appointment on March 27, is amidst increasing scrutiny regarding his alleged business connections and stock transactions with a controversial entrepreneur.
In a statement on social media, Gurung expressed that he stepped down to facilitate an unbiased investigation into his financial matters and to prevent any conflict of interest during his tenure.
He stated, "For me, ethics surpasses position, and public trust is paramount. The ongoing Gen Z movement in our nation, advocating for good governance, transparency, and accountability, has reinforced the idea that public life must be pure and leadership must be responsible."
Gurung was notably active during the Gen Z protests in September 2025, where he was seen distributing bottled water to demonstrators at key protest sites like Maitighar Mandala and Naya Baneshwor.
He also played a vital role in facilitating an agreement between former Kathmandu Mayor and rapper-turned-politician Prime Minister Balendra Shah 'Balen' and Ravi Lamichhane, a TV journalist-turned-politician and president of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP).
As per the Prime Minister's secretariat, Gurung has submitted his resignation letter to the Prime Minister.
Following this, PM Shah has taken on the responsibilities of the Home Ministry himself, as stated by the secretariat.
Previously, on April 9, Prime Minister Shah dismissed Labour, Employment, and Social Security Minister Dip Kumar Sah based on recommendations from the ruling RSP.
RSP president Rabi Lamichhane had urged Shah to act against Sah for misusing his position by facilitating the reappointment of his wife to the Health Insurance Board after her term had ended.
After Sah's dismissal, the Prime Minister assumed the Labour Ministry's responsibilities just 15 days after taking office.
