Government Initiative to Clear Illegal Structures

In a significant move, the Nepalese Government took action on Saturday to dismantle numerous unauthorized constructions established by landless individuals along the Bagmati River in the Thapathali and Gairegaun regions of Kathmandu.

This operation was a collaborative effort involving the Federal Government, spearheaded by Balendra Shah, alongside the Kathmandu Metropolitan City, supported by personnel from the Armed Police Force, Nepal Police, and Kathmandu Metropolitan Police.

Approximately two dozen families of landless settlers from Thapathali have been relocated to temporary accommodations at Dasharath Stadium in Kathmandu and Kirtipur Municipality, as reported by the police.

The operation saw around 146 families evicted from their makeshift homes in Thapathali, while about 200 families were removed from Gairegaun.

This initiative is part of a broader government strategy aimed at enhancing the aesthetic appeal of Kathmandu Metropolitan City and restoring the banks of the Bagmati River.

Previously, Balen attempted to clear these illegal structures during his tenure as Mayor of Kathmandu, but faced challenges due to a lack of support from the K P Oli-led government.

This recent demolition was conducted smoothly, as the government had previously notified the settlers to vacate the area voluntarily, assuring them of alternative arrangements.

Additionally, the government has promised to provide alternative land and rehabilitation options for the displaced landless settlers.

The demolition efforts will also extend to illegal structures located in the Shantinagar and Gaushala areas along the riverbank as part of this two-day initiative.
