Nepal Secures Three-Year Extension for Transition from Least Developed Countries Status

Nepal has successfully secured a three-year extension for its transition from the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) category, now set for November 2029. This decision, unanimously approved by the UN General Assembly, allows Nepal additional time to implement crucial reforms and enhance its socio-economic landscape. Initially scheduled for graduation in 2026, the extension comes after a request from Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal, emphasizing the need for adequate preparation. The extended period will focus on boosting production capacity and strengthening institutions, paving the way for a more robust future.

Nepal's Extended Graduation Timeline

Kathmandu: Nepal has been granted a three-year extension to its timeline for graduating from the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) classification, allowing the nation more time to prepare for this significant transition, as confirmed by a representative from the foreign ministry.

On Thursday, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) unanimously approved this extension, which will now last until November 24, 2029, according to Lok Bahadur Chhetri, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during a press briefing on Friday.

Initially, Nepal was set to graduate from the LDC category on November 24, 2026, following a decision made by the General Assembly in November 2021.

During its 81st session in New York, the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 81L.8, which was a result of a collaborative proposal from both Nepal and Bangladesh to extend their respective preparatory periods.

This decision provides Nepal with additional time to implement necessary structural and institutional reforms prior to its graduation from the LDC category, Chhetri noted.

Although Nepal was expected to transition this year, Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal reached out to the relevant UN agency on May 13 and 15, requesting more time to adequately prepare for the change.

The extended timeframe will be utilized to enhance production capabilities, fortify institutions, and foster socio-economic development, according to Chhetri.
