NEET UG Exam Canceled Amid Serious Allegations of Paper Leak

In light of serious allegations regarding a paper leak and various investigative reports from multiple states, the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for undergraduate courses has been annulled. The National Testing Agency (NTA) announced today that the exam, which took place on May 3, 2026, will no longer be valid and will be rescheduled. This decision was made following approval from the central government, leaving millions of students and their families in shock.

Approximately 24 lakh candidates participated in this year's NEET exam. The NTA stated that prior to the exam, several complaints regarding the dissemination of question paper materials were received from various states. Reports from Rajasthan and Uttarakhand indicated that certain sets of questions were circulated before the exam, with many of these questions later found to closely match those on the actual paper. After reviewing the available materials in coordination with central agencies and law enforcement, the NTA concluded that continuing with the current examination process would not align with standards of fairness and reliability.

According to investigative agencies, the Special Operations Group of the Rajasthan Police examined a question bank containing over 400 questions. It was reported that more than 100 questions from biology and chemistry were found to be very similar to those on the final exam paper. Consequently, searches and investigations were conducted in several locations, including Sikar in Rajasthan and Dehradun in Uttarakhand. Some coaching operators and intermediaries are also under scrutiny.

Allegations of exam series and videos have also emerged from Latur in Maharashtra. However, local authorities have stated that no formal investigation has commenced there yet. Despite this, these incidents have raised serious concerns about the transparency and security of the examination system.

The NTA reported that the matter was forwarded to central agencies for independent verification and necessary action on May 8. The agency emphasized its responsibility to maintain the credibility and security of national-level examinations, stating that canceling the exam was the only viable option given the circumstances.

The central government has decided to assign a comprehensive investigation of the entire matter to the CBI. The government believes that a thorough inquiry into the allegations surrounding the exam is essential to identify the culprits and prevent such incidents in the future. The NTA has assured full cooperation with the investigative agencies and stated that all necessary documents and materials will be provided.

The agency acknowledged that rescheduling the exam would cause significant inconvenience to students and their families. The prolonged preparation has led to mental stress and uncertainty among students. Nevertheless, the NTA insists that maintaining public trust in the examination system is of utmost priority, and less stringent measures would not suffice under the current conditions.

The NTA has clarified that registrations made for May 2026, along with candidate details and exam center preferences, will remain unchanged. Students will not need to re-register, nor will they incur any additional exam fees. The previously submitted exam fees will be refunded, and the retest will be conducted using the agency's resources.

The agency has urged students and parents to rely solely on official communications and to avoid unverified news circulating on social media or other informal platforms. New exam dates and the issuance of new admit cards will be announced through official channels soon.

This entire controversy has also taken a political turn, with Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge sharply criticizing the central government. Rahul Gandhi remarked that NEET has turned into an auction, with allegations of question papers being sold on messaging apps before the exam, while millions of students worked hard throughout the year. He stated that the current government has caused the most damage to the dreams of the country's youth.
