Neeru Dhanda: Flag-Bearer for India

Neeru Dhanda, a prominent Indian trap shooter, has been selected as the flag-bearer for India at the closing ceremony of the 2026 Asian Games, taking place in Aichi-Nagoya on Sunday. This recognition comes after her outstanding performance, where she secured two gold medals and one silver. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has officially announced her role, and she will proudly carry the national flag during the Parade of Nations at Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium, as reported by ESPN.


A Remarkable Achievement

Dhanda's achievements at the Asian Games have been historic. She made history by becoming the first Indian woman to clinch an individual gold medal in trap shooting, achieving a remarkable score of 26 in the women's individual event. Additionally, she set a new Asian Games record during the qualification round, hitting 28 out of 30 targets.


Triple Medal Triumph

Following her individual gold, Dhanda earned a silver medal in the women's team trap event, competing alongside Aashima Ahlawat and Manisha Keer. She then teamed up with Kynan Chenai to win gold in the mixed team trap event, marking a significant milestone as they set a new Asian Games record with a score of 34, surpassing the previous record of 30 held by Qatar. This victory also marked India's first gold in the mixed team trap shooting category at the Games.


Closing Ceremony Details

Although Dhanda returned to India after her shooting events, she will make her way back to Japan for the closing ceremony. The event is set to commence at 6 PM local time (2:30 PM IST) on Sunday at the Paloma Mizuho Stadium, also known as the Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium.


India's Overall Performance

India wrapped up its campaign at the Asian Games with a total of 85 medals, comprising 21 gold, 27 silver, and 37 bronze, securing the fourth position in the overall medal standings. China led the tally with an impressive 341 medals, including 169 gold, followed by Japan with 269 medals, of which 83 were gold. South Korea finished third with 150 medals, including 39 gold.


Ceremonial Handover

The closing ceremony will also include the ceremonial transfer of the Asian Games flag to Doha, which is set to host the 2030 edition of the continental event.
