NDRF Conducts Urgent Rescue Amid Assam Floods

Jorhat, July 25: A significant rescue mission was executed by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) in Assam's Jorhat district, where they evacuated a critically ill elderly woman from the isolated Kawaimari Mising village in Teok. She was promptly transported to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH) for urgent medical care.

This operation highlights the difficulties faced by emergency services as floodwaters continue to isolate numerous villages and disrupt transportation throughout the district.

An official from the NDRF stated that the team mobilized after receiving an urgent request from the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA).

Rescue and relief efforts are ongoing in the submerged regions of Jorhat, with the team alerted about the elderly woman's precarious situation in Kawaimari Mising village.

"Due to the floodwaters cutting off road access, we had to deploy our rescue boat nearly five kilometers from the village," the official explained.

Upon reaching the woman's residence, the team evaluated her health, provided immediate medical assistance, and safely evacuated her.

"She was subsequently transported by ambulance to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital for further treatment. The operation was conducted with support from the Teok Station House Officer (SHO)," the official added.

This rescue operation occurs as the flood situation in Jorhat, especially in Teok and Mariani, remains largely unchanged, with ongoing rescue and relief activities in several inundated areas.

As per the Assam State Disaster Reporting and Information Management System (DRIMS), Jorhat is one of the 12 districts affected by floods in the state. All five revenue circles—Teok, Jorhat East, Jorhat West, Mariani, and Titabar—are still grappling with the impacts of the floods.

Data from the district administration indicates that floodwaters have submerged 72 revenue villages in Teok, 28 in Jorhat East, 57 in Jorhat West, seven in Mariani, and 22 in Titabar, affecting a total of 126,793 individuals.

Teok is reported as the most severely impacted revenue circle, with 77,350 people affected, according to DRIMS.

The floods have inundated 6,570.44 hectares of farmland, impacted 39,999 livestock, and resulted in the loss of 2,868 animals.

Additionally, the deluge has caused significant damage to roads and bridges, severely hampering connectivity throughout the district.

Many roads in Teok and rural paths in other affected areas have been breached, submerged, or made inaccessible due to strong currents and overflowing floodwaters, complicating rescue and relief operations.

Authorities have confirmed that rescue efforts and relief distribution are ongoing in the affected regions, with emergency response teams on standby for any further emergencies.
