Joint Roadshow Marks Candidate Nomination

Guwahati, Mar 23: In a show of solidarity, candidates representing the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) from four constituencies in Guwahati conducted a joint roadshow on Monday, prior to submitting their nomination papers. This event comes amid recent tensions within the BJP's state faction.

The rally included BJP candidates Pradyut Bordoloi (Dispur), Diplu Ranjan Sharma (New Guwahati), and Vijay Gupta (Central Guwahati), alongside Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) candidate Tapan Das (Dimoria).

Supporters from both parties gathered at Khanapara field early in the morning, with many braving the gloomy weather to show their support.

The candidates paraded in an open vehicle towards the District Commissioner's office, while party workers lined the streets, waving flags and chanting slogans as the procession moved through the city.

According to regulations, candidates will walk the final stretch to the District Commissioner's office, accompanied by a limited number of supporters.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made a brief appearance at Khanapara, referring to the election as a "festival of democracy" and expressing optimism about a strong electoral outcome.

"The atmosphere is fantastic, and we are poised to win by significant margins. The number of seats the BJP will secure will astonish everyone. I won't specify a figure now, but the results will be telling," he stated.

Afterward, he departed for Kaliabor, where he is set to join senior AGP leaders Atul Bora and Keshab Mahanta for their nomination submissions.

Before filing his nomination for the 35 No. New Guwahati constituency, BJP candidate Diplu Ranjan Sharma remarked that the turnout was indicative of public support for the government's initiatives.

"The party's principles resonate with the electorate, as evidenced by the overwhelming support," he noted.

This joint effort occurs against a backdrop of internal strife within the BJP following candidate announcements, particularly in the Dispur constituency.

The decision to nominate a recently joined former Congress MP sparked protests from some local party leaders.

Sitting BJP MLA Atul Bora, who was not granted a ticket, had initially suggested he might run as an Independent or support the Congress candidate.

However, party officials later intervened and convinced him to remain aligned.

In a related development, senior BJP leader Jayanta Das, viewed as a strong candidate, has resigned from the party and is expected to run as an Independent from Dispur.

The elections for the 126-member Assam Assembly are set for April 9, with vote counting scheduled for May 4.
