New Delhi, April 11: The National Commission for Women (NCW) has initiated suo motu action regarding the tragic suicide of a woman in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, which is believed to have stemmed from ongoing domestic violence and mistreatment by her husband and in-laws.

The Commission has instructed the state Director General of Police to file a First Information Report (FIR) under relevant legal statutes, ensure the prompt arrest of all involved parties, and carry out a thorough investigation with evidence collection, submitting an Action Taken Report within a week.

In a formal statement, the NCW expressed, "We have taken suo motu cognizance of a deeply troubling report concerning the death of a woman following alleged prolonged domestic violence by her husband and in-laws."

"This incident, where the woman reportedly took her own life after enduring continuous harassment and a violent attack, raises significant concerns regarding the safety and dignity of women in marital relationships. The Commission has vehemently condemned this abhorrent act and expressed profound sorrow over such instances of domestic violence," it further stated.

Officials reported that the 25-year-old woman died by suicide after allegedly suffering from ongoing physical and emotional abuse.

According to police, a violent altercation, reportedly ignited by a dispute over a hair found in food, was the immediate trigger for the incident. A case was registered at the Chhawani police station earlier this week.

The deceased, identified as Eshwari Bhujang-Bankar, married Ajay Bankar on June 28, 2020, and lived in the Shravasti Colony area of Bhavsingpura. Shortly after their marriage, Ajay allegedly developed a drinking problem and began to abuse her.

Despite receiving a dowry that included gold jewelry, ₹2 lakh in cash, and various household items, the husband is accused of continuing to demand additional financial support from her family. He also allegedly pressured her to ensure that her father made payments on a plot he had purchased.

Authorities have confirmed that an investigation is currently in progress, and more information will be provided as the inquiry unfolds.
