Jindal Champions Polo for 2036 Olympics Bid

On Sunday, Naveen Jindal, a Member of Parliament from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), expressed his support for incorporating polo into India's ambitious proposal to host the 2036 Olympic Games. He mentioned that efforts will be made to revive the sport and identify appropriate venues throughout the nation. India is making significant strides in its quest to secure the rights to host the 2036 Olympics, with the Sports Authority of India (SAI) enhancing its athlete development programs to boost medal counts in upcoming competitions.

Historical Significance of Polo

During an interview at the Northern India Polo Championship final, where Jindal Panther faced off against Jaipur Achievers, he highlighted the historical importance of polo in the Olympic movement. Jindal asserted that India is well-prepared to host polo if it returns to the Olympic roster. He pointed out that the Jaipur Polo Ground in Delhi is an excellent venue for significant matches, including finals, should polo be included in the Olympic events. He also mentioned that cities like Jaipur have robust polo infrastructure, and other locations could be upgraded to meet international standards.

"Our goal is to ensure that if the Olympics are held in India in 2036, polo is part of it. Polo was featured in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, and now, a century later, we have made considerable advancements. The Jaipur Polo Ground in Delhi is the best venue in our country for this sport. Polo can be played here, in Jaipur, and at other grounds that we will enhance. Currently, we believe that this historic ground is capable of hosting the finals and main matches," he stated.

Government Support for Polo Development

When asked about government initiatives to promote polo in India, Jindal responded, "We have the government's backing. Our federation, the Indian Polo Association (IPA), is recognized by the government, which provides us with necessary support as needed. The polo season runs until March, and this is the last match of the season before we resume in October."

Jindal Panther's Thrilling Victory

In the match, Jindal Panther executed a remarkable comeback to defeat Jaipur Achievers 9-8 in a thrilling Northern India Polo Championship final, with Juan Gris Zavaletta scoring the decisive goal in the final moments.

Match Dynamics

The match showcased a dynamic flow from the beginning. The first chukker ended in a 1-1 tie, thanks to an equalizing goal from Naveen Jindal. Panther took the lead in the second chukker, establishing a 4-2 advantage through aggressive play led by Siddhant Sharma and Zavaletta.

Jaipur Achievers Take Charge

However, Jaipur Achievers turned the tide in the third chukker, led by Alejo Aramburu's relentless offense, taking a 5-4 lead. The intensity escalated in the fourth chukker, where Juan Zavaletta leveled the score at 5-5, but Achievers quickly regained control with two goals from Aramburu and Daniel Otamendi.

Final Chukker Drama

By the end of the fifth chukker, Jaipur Achievers had extended their lead to 8-5, with Sawai Padmanabh Singh contributing to the score. It appeared that Panther was losing grip on the match. Yet, the final chukker brought a stunning turnaround. Jindal Panther emerged with renewed vigor, as Ramiro Zavaletta and Juan Zavaletta scored crucial goals to tie the game at 8-8. In the closing moments, Panther earned a penalty, and with just 29 seconds left, Juan Gris Zavaletta calmly converted it, sealing a thrilling 9-8 victory.
