National Response Team Deployed to Combat Chandipura Virus Outbreak in Gujarat and Rajasthan
Strengthening Preparedness Against Chandipura Virus
The central health ministry has deployed a National Joint Outbreak Response Team (NJORT) to enhance efforts in managing the ongoing outbreak of Chandipura virus disease (CHPV) in Gujarat and Rajasthan. This deployment is part of a coordinated initiative that includes ongoing scientific investigations conducted by a nationwide network of research institutions, alongside continuous monitoring under the Integrated Disease Surveillance Program (IDSP) facilitated by the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC). The primary goal of these collaborative efforts is to deepen the understanding of the virus's transmission, clinical spectrum, epidemiology, and potential treatment strategies, thereby guiding evidence-based public health interventions.
Expert Team Mobilized for Comprehensive Assessment
To support the NJORT, the NCDC has activated its Public Health Emergency Operations Centre (PHEOC). This multidisciplinary team comprises experts from the NCDC, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), and the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD). Their role includes investigating the outbreak, assessing the epidemic, managing clinical care for patients, coordinating laboratory efforts, monitoring viral vectors, and assisting state governments in implementing public health measures.
Ground-Level Evaluation and Recommendations
The team will collaborate with state health departments to review ground-level responses and will submit recommendations to the health ministry after completing their assessments. The ministry noted that this deployment coincides with some of the most extensive scientific investigations into the Chandipura virus conducted in recent years. Experts from various ICMR institutes, including the National Institute of Epidemiology (Chennai), the National Vector Borne Disease Control Research Institute (Puducherry), the National Institute of Virology (Pune), and the National Institute of Preclinical Research (Hyderabad), are working alongside the Gujarat state health department.
Understanding Symptoms and Strengthening Public Health Measures
The initiative brings together specialists in epidemiology, virology, entomology, veterinary science, and laboratory diagnostics to comprehend the full spectrum of symptoms associated with Chandipura virus infections, ranging from mild fever to acute encephalitis syndrome (AES). Enhanced surveillance for acute febrile illness (AFI) and AES symptoms among patients in affected districts is underway. Additionally, community-based serosurveys are being conducted to estimate asymptomatic infections and assess the true extent of virus transmission.
Laboratory Teams Focus on Understanding Disease Dynamics
Laboratory teams are working collaboratively to strengthen diagnostic testing and develop better animal models to gain insights into the disease's progression and its causes. The primary focus of the investigations is to determine the modes of virus transmission. While sandflies are known carriers of the Chandipura virus, scientists are also exploring the potential roles of other insects, such as mosquitoes, ticks, and mites, in its spread.
Ongoing Analysis of Insect Samples
A significant number of insect samples collected from affected areas are currently undergoing laboratory analysis. Officials have emphasized that identifying the specific vectors responsible for the current outbreak will be premature until scientific investigations are completed.
