The week-long Nalwar and Kisan Fair began in Sundernagar on Sunday, marked by traditional rituals and a ceremonial opening led by Himachal Pradesh Cabinet Minister Rajesh Dharmani, who performed the Vrishabh Pujan at Nagoun Khad.

A Grand Opening Ceremony

The inauguration featured a vibrant procession that started from the PWD Rest House and concluded at the fairgrounds, showcasing significant public involvement and enthusiasm.

Cultural Heritage and Historical Importance

Speaking at Jawahar Park, Dharmani emphasized the fair's cultural and historical importance, asserting that such events are vital for preserving the state's rich heritage.

He traced the fair's roots back to the former Suket princely state, noting its historical status as one of North India's largest cattle fairs. He remarked, “Despite the rapid mechanization in agriculture and evolving rural practices, the Nalwar Fair has maintained its traditional essence and significance.”

Economic and Social Impact

The minister pointed out that the fair serves as a crucial socio-economic platform, featuring cultural events, sports competitions, and trade activities that draw participants from across the state and beyond.

He added, “These events not only showcase local talent but also significantly enhance the regional economy,” highlighting the fair's role in fostering community engagement and supporting rural livelihoods.

Focus on Rural Development and Youth Initiatives

Connecting the event to the state's broader policy goals, Dharmani mentioned that the 2026–27 state budget prioritizes rural development, agriculture, women's empowerment, and youth initiatives.

He announced that flagship programs like “Khelo Himachal” and the “Chitta Mukt Abhiyan” will be launched in April at various administrative levels.

Support Price Increases for Farmers

The minister revealed new budgetary measures aimed at bolstering the agricultural sector, including revised support prices for various products:

Cow milk: ₹61 per litre
Buffalo milk: ₹71 per litre
Turmeric: increased from ₹90 to ₹150 per kg
Ginger: set at ₹30 per kg
Wheat: ₹60 per kg
Maize: ₹50 per kg

He stated, “These initiatives are expected to enhance farmers' incomes and strengthen the rural economy.”

Advancements in Education and Healthcare

Dharmani noted that Himachal Pradesh has improved its national education ranking from 21st to 5th, attributing this success to recruitment efforts and a renewed focus on quality education. He mentioned the establishment of 199 CBSE-affiliated schools to further enhance the education system.

In healthcare, he acknowledged previous shortages of specialists, particularly at Nerchowk Medical College, and assured that the government is actively working to fill these gaps.

Disaster Relief Efforts

Addressing the impact of natural disasters in Mandi, Kullu, and Chamba districts in 2023 and 2025, the minister stated that while ₹1,500 crore in central assistance is still pending, the state government has provided financial relief of ₹7–8 lakh to families whose homes were completely destroyed.

Earlier, SDM Sundernagar and Fair Committee Chairman Amar Negi welcomed the attendees, highlighting the fair's dual role as a traditional cattle trading center and a cultural landmark.

The event saw participation from numerous public representatives and officials, underscoring its ongoing significance in Himachal Pradesh's socio-cultural landscape.
