Nalbari Launches Electric Vehicle Charging Station to Boost Clean Mobility
Nalbari's New Electric Vehicle Charging Station
Nalbari, Nov 6: Assam has made significant progress towards sustainable transportation with the inauguration of an electric vehicle (EV) charging station in Nalbari, marking it as the seventh district in the state to establish such a facility.
The event was officiated by Hagrama Mohilary, Chief of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), alongside various cabinet ministers, including Jayanta Malla Baruah, the Public Health Engineering Minister, and Transport Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary.
Mohilary expressed optimism about the initiative, stating, “This is a commendable step. While the service is not yet widespread across Assam, I am hopeful it will expand to all regions. I also inaugurated the charging station during the ceremony. We should consider introducing hydrogen buses, similar to those already in operation in cities like Delhi and Mumbai.”
Jayanta Malla Baruah, the local legislator, highlighted that the absence of charging infrastructure had previously hindered the expansion of electric buses. He remarked, “The implementation was delayed due to the lack of a charging station, as a green bus can only travel approximately 150 kilometers on a single charge. With Nalbari now equipped with this facility, we can develop a robust urban transport system.”
Furthermore, two fully air-conditioned electric buses were launched to facilitate travel between Nalbari and Guwahati. These buses commenced operations on November 6, with routes extending to Khanapara in Guwahati.
The Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) announced that one bus will depart from Nalbari to Guwahati at 7:45 am, while another will leave Guwahati for Nalbari at 8:00 am. In the evening, two return trips will be available at 5:00 pm in both directions.
This new service is part of the initiative to introduce 100 electric buses under the Prime Minister’s E-Bus Sewa program this year, representing a significant advancement towards cleaner and more efficient public transportation in Assam.
Transport Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary informed attendees that there are currently 356 green buses operating throughout the state.
