Political Shift in Assam

Guwahati, March 18:  In a significant political shift ahead of the Assembly elections scheduled for April 9, Nagaon MP Pradyut Bordoloi has officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday.

The induction ceremony took place at the residence of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in New Delhi, where Bordoloi, a two-time MP and former minister in the Congress government led by Tarun Gogoi, donned the saffron cap.

During the event, Bordoloi expressed that his choice was “emotionally challenging” but essential for the greater good of Assam.

“This decision was not made lightly. I became a member of the Congress at 16, and the party has provided me with recognition and respect. However, I have recently felt increasingly marginalized and constrained,” he stated.

He highlighted feelings of disrespect within the party and ideological disagreements as primary factors for his departure.

“I experienced humiliation and exclusion from significant discussions, while my juniors were often prioritized. I sought an environment where I could work with dignity and make a meaningful contribution,” he remarked.

Bordoloi also mentioned recent events within the Congress that contributed to his discomfort.

“Certain actions and decisions regarding sensitive matters and leadership within the party have troubled me. I envision an Assam that emphasizes peace, development, and unity,” he added.

Chief Minister Sarma welcomed Bordoloi, asserting that his joining would greatly enhance the BJP's strength in Assam.

“Bordoloi is a seasoned and respected leader with extensive political experience. His ties with the Congress date back to 1975, and his decision to join the BJP signifies a broader transformation in Assam’s political landscape. Together, we aim to realize the vision of a ‘Viksit Bharat’ under Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” Sarma stated.

Reflecting on his previous collaboration with Sarma during their time in Congress, Bordoloi noted that their shared vision for Assam influenced his decision.

“We have previously worked together towards a common goal for Assam’s advancement. I perceive that same dedication and enthusiasm today, and I wish to contribute to that vision,” he expressed.

Reiterating his commitment, Bordoloi affirmed he would work “as a proud Assamese” for the development of the state.

“I have made this decision after thorough contemplation, keeping the future of Assam in mind. I aspire to contribute to peace, progress, and inclusive development,” he concluded.
