Nagaon, Sept 19: The nomination papers for the Nagaon Lok Sabha bye-election have undergone scrutiny, resulting in 18 out of 25 candidates being deemed valid, paving the way for the next phase of the electoral process.

Among the candidates whose nominations were accepted are Devasish Sharma from the BJP, Badruddin Ajmal, the chief of AIUDF, and Sibamoni Bora representing Congress, as confirmed by the Chief Election Officer's office on Friday.

September 19 marks the final day for candidates to withdraw their nominations, after which the definitive list of contenders will be established.

As candidates ramp up their campaigns, pressing issues such as unemployment, development, and minority rights have surfaced as focal points.

Badruddin Ajmal, the AIUDF candidate, emphasized the need to tackle various challenges faced by the constituency's impoverished residents.

He stated, “There are numerous issues, and the poor require financial support. Now that I am in the race, you will witness improvements shortly. Some Muslim voters who previously supported other parties are now aligning with us.”

Congress candidate Sibamoni Bora accused the BJP of intimidating individuals who switch their allegiance to the party.

She claimed, “Those who are moving to the BJP are being coerced. They are warned that if they do not show support, police action will follow, and legal cases will be initiated against them.”

Bora also criticized the BJP's stance on minority voters, pointing out that while the party previously claimed it did not need their support, it is now actively campaigning in areas with substantial minority populations.

In response, BJP candidate Devasish Sharma asserted that voters are well-informed about the issues at hand and will make their decisions accordingly.

He remarked, “The public is aware of everything. They have experienced much, and this time they will express their views. Unemployment is a significant concern in Nagaon district, and we are committed to its development and empowering its residents. Our focus should be on the youth.”

With the scrutiny phase concluded, candidates have until the September 19 deadline to withdraw their nominations. Voting in the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency is scheduled for October 6, with the counting of votes set for October 9.
