Nagaland's Koridang Assembly By-Election: Voter Enthusiasm Amid Security Concerns
Voting Begins in Koridang Assembly By-Election
Kohima: The by-election for the Koridang Assembly constituency in Nagaland's Mokokchung district commenced on Thursday morning, with extensive security measures in place, according to election officials.
A significant turnout was observed, with many voters, particularly women, queuing at the 30 polling stations throughout the constituency, reflecting a strong voter engagement. Polling started at 7 a.m. and will run continuously until 4 p.m.
In total, 22,390 eligible voters, including 11,013 women, are set to determine the fate of six candidates. The vote counting is scheduled for May 4.
Due to recent violent incidents, the district administration has enforced a night curfew in four villages within the constituency following clashes that resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries just two days prior.
Mokokchung's Deputy Commissioner, Ajit Kumar Verma, has also mandated the sealing of the inter-state border with Assam from April 7 until 6 p.m. on April 9. This action aims to prevent unauthorized movements, curb the distribution of bribes, and deter intimidation or other disruptive activities during the election.
This by-election was prompted by the passing of the sitting MLA, Imkong L. Imchen, who died on November 11, 2024, at a private hospital in Guwahati after a brief illness at the age of 75.
The BJP, part of the ruling People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA), has nominated Daochier I. Imchen, the late legislator's son, as their consensus candidate. Other notable candidates include I. Abenjang from the National People’s Party (NPP) and T. Chalukumba Ao from the Congress.
Three Independent candidates—Imchatoba Imchen, Imtiwapang Kichu, and Major Toshikaba (Retd)—are also contesting, adding to the competitiveness of the election.
Chalukumba Ao has previously run for this seat three times (2013, 2018, and 2023) without success, while Major Toshikaba (Retd) narrowly lost in the 2023 election as a candidate for the Naga People’s Front (NPF).
The late Imchen had a distinguished political career, having been elected to the Nagaland Assembly five times—initially as an Independent in 2003, then on NPF tickets in 2008, 2013, and 2018, and finally winning on a BJP ticket in 2023.
Campaigning for the Koridang Assembly by-election, which is designated for Scheduled Tribes, concluded on Tuesday amidst heightened tensions following violent incidents reported on April 5 and 6.
A police official reported that at least one individual was killed, several were injured, numerous vehicles were damaged, and 16 people were detained in connection with the election-related violence.
Authorities also recovered arms and ammunition from various locations, leading to the imposition of a night curfew in the affected villages.
Chief Electoral Officer Bhagyashree Banayat stated that all necessary precautions have been implemented to ensure the by-election is conducted in a fair, free, and peaceful manner.
