Nagaland Government Pushes for Ministerial Interlocutor in Naga Peace Talks

Kohima, Aug 5: On Tuesday, the Political Affairs Committee (PAC) of the Nagaland Government reaffirmed its call for a ministerial-level interlocutor to facilitate the ongoing Naga political discussions. The committee plans to engage various stakeholders soon to develop a comprehensive roadmap for the peace process.

After a private meeting at the Chief Minister's residence, State Government spokesperson and Minister for Power and Parliamentary Affairs, KG Kenye, shared that the PAC reviewed the progress made since their last gathering and decided to maintain their previous stance.

“The PAC convened at 10 am with all 28 members present. We assessed the resolutions from our earlier meetings and the developments over the past two years. After this review, we agreed to uphold our previous position,” Kenye stated.

He added that the committee would now strategize on how to involve stakeholders before presenting a concrete plan aimed at resolving the long-standing Naga political conflict.

When asked about the demand for a ministerial-level interlocutor, Kenye emphasized that this request is crucial for ensuring that the concerns of all parties are adequately represented. He noted that the Centre has acknowledged their request and is considering it.

Kenye mentioned that engaging other political entities and stakeholders would require time to lay the groundwork for broader discussions.

“The entire Naga community is a stakeholder in this matter as it pertains to their future. We have significant preparation ahead, and due to the sensitive nature of the issue, we aim to avoid causing any offense or distress,” he remarked. He urged all parties involved to refrain from blame-shifting and instead concentrate on finding a resolution.

“Accusations are rampant, but we need to reduce the rhetoric and focus on what benefits our people and their future,” he added.

Regarding the emergence of an 'Eastern Flank' within the NSCN-IM, Kenye stated that the Government is closely observing the situation but will refrain from commenting until more information is verified.
