Ujjain, September 4: Authorities are probing the circumstances surrounding the death of a 38-year-old man found in a hotel room near the Mahakal Temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, on Friday.

The deceased has been identified as Mukesh Kumar, who hailed from New Kotgaon in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. He had traveled to Ujjain on September 1 with his friend, Vineet Goyal, to visit the temple.

According to police reports, the duo checked into Hotel Temple View, located in the Naliya Bakhal area, directly across from the Neelkanth Gate of the Mahakal Temple's Mahakal Lok corridor.

On Friday morning, hotel management notified the Mahakal police after a strong odor was detected coming from Mukesh's room.

Upon arrival, police discovered his body, which was in an advanced state of decomposition. Hotel staff had to use a spray to mask the unpleasant smell.

A forensic team was summoned to the scene to gather evidence and analyze the situation.

Gagan Badal, the Station House Officer at Mahakal Police Station, stated that the precise cause of death would be determined following a post-mortem examination.

"We will ascertain the cause of death after the autopsy. Currently, we are exploring all potential leads, including the possibility of foul play," Badal remarked.

Reports indicate that Mukesh and Vineet had been staying at the hotel for approximately two days.

Hotel personnel informed investigators that the pair was often seen entering and exiting the hotel after consuming alcohol.

On September 3, Vineet allegedly settled the hotel bill in full and departed without notifying anyone, raising suspicions.

"Vineet's sudden exit and payment of the bill a day prior to the discovery of the body are suspicious. We have dispatched teams to locate him, and we are reviewing CCTV footage from the hotel and nearby areas," Badal added.

Authorities are examining the CCTV footage to track the movements of both Mukesh and Vineet, as well as to check if anyone else visited their hotel room.

The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, and further information is expected to emerge following the autopsy and forensic analysis.

Investigators are also looking into the timeline of events from September 1, when the friends arrived in Ujjain, to September 3, when Vineet left the hotel.
