Kolkata, Aug 13: A 32-year-old woman was found dead under suspicious circumstances at her rented accommodation in Dum Dum Cantonment, located in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, on Thursday, according to officials.

The deceased, identified as Jaya Pramanik, was discovered in the early hours of Thursday. Her body, which was bloodied and wrapped in a blanket, was located on the floor of her home. Authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident, believed to have taken place late Wednesday night.

As per police reports, Jaya resided in a rented property in the Subhashnagar locality of Dum Dum Cantonment. She was a mother to a three-year-old son and often traveled for work, leaving her child with an acquaintance in Shyambazar, north Kolkata.

Jaya was expected to return home with her son on Wednesday night. However, after failing to reach her by phone, friends and acquaintances went to check on her.

Upon entering her residence in the early hours of Thursday, they discovered her lifeless body on the floor. Authorities noted multiple injuries on her body, which has been sent to Sagar Dutta Medical College and Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Initial findings suggest that Jaya may have been murdered. Local residents have alleged that she worked as a sex worker and mentioned that a young man from the Jheel Colony area of Bediapara frequently visited her. The police are currently attempting to locate and question this individual.

There are claims that a CCTV camera positioned outside her rented home was damaged. Nevertheless, police have reportedly acquired footage showing individuals entering and exiting the premises, which they are currently reviewing. Friends and relatives of Jaya have also been interviewed as part of the investigation.

"A case has been registered under the relevant sections. The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, and the actual cause of death will be determined once the reports are available. The investigation is ongoing," stated a senior officer from the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate.
