Mysterious Death of Nurse at Kolkata Hospital Raises Concerns

Tragic Incident at N.R.S. Medical College

Kolkata, Aug 13: A nursing staff member at the state-operated N.R.S. Medical College and Hospital in central Kolkata was discovered dead under unclear circumstances on Thursday.

Her lifeless body was located in the hospital's washroom early in the morning. The nurse had been on night duty in the high dependency unit (HDU) of the gynaecology department the previous night.

According to recent updates, after she was unaccounted for during her shift, her colleagues initiated a search, ultimately finding her body in a restroom early this morning.

The hospital authorities promptly notified the police. The deceased nurse's body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, and the true cause of death will be determined once the autopsy report is completed, as stated by a hospital source.

This incident echoes a tragic event from August 2024, when the body of a female junior doctor was found in the seminar room of the emergency department at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in North Kolkata. It was later revealed that she had been brutally raped and murdered the night prior.

The shocking nature of that incident led to widespread protests across the state, which eventually gained national attention. The recent mysterious death of a nurse in a government hospital in Kolkata has reignited concerns.

Following the previous tragedy, the then Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress government pledged to enhance security and surveillance in state-run medical facilities. However, there have been ongoing questions regarding the effectiveness of these measures over the past two years.

Earlier this year, in March, a young man lost his life after becoming trapped in a malfunctioning elevator at R.G. Kar, which had not been attended to by hospital staff for an extended period. Additionally, a senior citizen patient died while attempting to reach a second-floor restroom due to the unavailability of a stretcher.
