Murder of Notorious Bandit in Rajasthan's High-Security Jail Raises Security Concerns
Shocking Incident in Ajmer Jail
The murder of infamous bandit Jagan Gurjar in Ajmer's high-security prison, regarded as one of the safest in Rajasthan, has sent shockwaves across the state. The 50-year-old, known for his reign of terror in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh, was discovered dead in his cell on Monday afternoon. This incident has once again raised serious questions regarding the security protocols within Rajasthan's correctional facilities.
Reports indicate that Jagan Gurjar, a resident of Bhavutipura village in the Dholpur district, was found unconscious around 3 PM in his cell. Jail staff attempted to rouse him multiple times, and upon receiving no response, they opened the cell door. Subsequently, the prison doctor pronounced him dead. Superintendent of Police Harshvardhan Agrawal noted that initial observations at the scene suggest foul play, although there are no indications of a gang war; rather, it appears to stem from a personal dispute, as only one other inmate was present in the cell.
Suspect Identified
Investigations have pointed towards Vishnu Jat, the inmate who shared the cell with Gurjar, as the prime suspect in the murder. Vishnu gained notoriety following his involvement in the high-profile Kuldeep Jaghina murder case in Bharatpur in 2023. Sources within the jail suggest that a long-standing rivalry over dominance existed between the two inmates. A towel belonging to Vishnu was recovered from the scene, and authorities suspect it may have been used to strangle Gurjar. While no external injuries were found on Gurjar's body, signs of strangulation were evident.
Criminal Background of the Suspect
Vishnu Jat has a well-documented criminal history, with six cases registered against him, including motorcycle theft. Coming from a modest background, he initially engaged in petty crimes. During his time in the Sevar Central Jail, he met gangster Pankaj, where they allegedly conspired to murder Kuldeep Jaghina. On July 12, 2023, while being transported to court, Kuldeep was shot dead at the Amoli toll plaza, with Vishnu reportedly sitting behind him on the bus and firing the first shot. He was later apprehended during a police encounter after sustaining a gunshot wound to his leg.
Jagan Gurjar's Infamous Legacy
Jagan Gurjar was one of the last notorious bandits of the Chambal region, with 128 criminal cases filed against him across Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh, including serious offenses like murder, extortion, kidnapping, and robbery. His criminal record dates back to 1994, and he famously threatened to blow up the palace of then-Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje during the Gurjar reservation movement in 2008. Gurjar had surrendered three times and maintained a significant influence in the Chambal ravines.
Family's Outrage and Demands for Justice
Following the murder, Gurjar's family expressed their outrage. His son, Asaram Gurjar, claimed that Jagan had been transferred from Dholpur Jail to Ajmer High-Security Jail just three months prior. Initially, he was housed with his brother, Pappu Gurjar, but was later moved to share a cell with Vishnu Jat. Asaram alleged that his father was being mistreated in prison and had submitted a complaint to the state's Home Minister, Jawahar Singh Bedham, demanding a CBI investigation. The family is also concerned for Pappu Gurjar's safety.
Increased Security Measures
In response to the incident, security protocols have been tightened in both Dholpur and Ajmer. Jagan's body has been placed in the mortuary of Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital for an autopsy, with additional police forces deployed in anticipation of the body being returned to his village.
Ajmer High-Security Jail was established in 2015 to house the state's most dangerous criminals, including members of the Anandpal Singh and Lawrence Bishnoi gangs. This incident marks the first murder within the facility, posing a significant challenge to the administration.
Historical Context of Violence in Rajasthan's Prisons
It's worth noting that Rajasthan's prisons have a history of violent incidents. In 2014, Balveer Banuada, a close associate of the Anandpal gang, was murdered in a gang conflict at Bikaner Central Jail. In 2019, a Pakistani inmate named Shakurullah was beaten to death by fellow prisoners in Jaipur Central Jail. Additionally, in 2010, Jailor Bharat Bhushan Bhatt was killed by an inmate with a sharp weapon in Jodhpur Central Jail. The murder of Jagan Gurjar has once again raised critical concerns regarding prison security and inmate supervision.
