Sreeshankar's Impressive Performance

Indian long jumper Murali Sreeshankar achieved a remarkable feat by winning the silver medal in the men's long jump event at the Asian Games 2026 on Monday, with a top jump of 8.07 meters. This marks his second consecutive silver medal at the Asian Games, having previously finished as the runner-up at the Hangzhou 2023 edition, as reported by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI).


Tight Competition in Men's Long Jump

The gold medal was claimed by China's Shi Yuhao, who recorded a season-best jump of 8.17 meters. Uzbekistan's Anvar Anvarov secured the bronze with a jump of 8.06 meters, while Taiwan's Lin Yu-tang finished fourth with a best of 8.05 meters. The competition was intense, with only 12 centimeters separating the top four athletes. Sreeshankar managed to finish just one centimeter ahead of Anvarov to clinch the silver.


Sreeshankar's Journey to the Final

Sreeshankar qualified for the final with a jump of 7.84 meters, placing him second overall. During the final, he consistently maintained his position, surpassing the eight-meter mark and holding second place throughout the latter part of the event.


India's Growing Medal Count

This silver medal adds to Sreeshankar's accolades, marking his second medal at the Asian Games following his silver in Hangzhou 2023. Another Indian athlete, David Solomon Patturaj, finished seventh with a jump of 7.70 meters. With Sreeshankar's achievement, India's overall medal tally has reached 43, which includes four gold, 19 silver, and 20 bronze medals. Currently, India ranks 12th in the medal standings, with athletics contributing 17 medals to the country's total.


Additional Achievements

Earlier on the same day, Parul Chaudhary secured her second bronze medal in the women's 5000m with a time of 15:14.61. Vithya Ramraj also earned a bronze in the 400m hurdles, achieving a personal best of 54.75 seconds, breaking the national record she previously shared with PT Usha. Additionally, Gulveer Singh won his second silver in the men's 1500m with a personal best of 3:36.72.
