Preparations Underway for T20 Mumbai League
The defending champions, Mumbai South Central (MSC) Maratha Royals, are ramping up their preparations for the upcoming Season 4 of the T20 Mumbai League, set to take place at the renowned Wankhede Stadium from June 1 to 13.
This tournament will run concurrently with the inaugural T20 Mumbai Women's League, featuring prominent names from Mumbai cricket alongside emerging talents. Captain Siddhesh Lad expressed that the team has quickly begun preparations to defend their title. Notable Indian players such as Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Ajinkya Rahane, Shivam Dube, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sarfaraz Khan, Shardul Thakur, and Tushar Deshpande are expected to participate.
Defending Champions' Strategy
Lad emphasized the importance of rigorous preparation, stating, "We began our practice just a few days after the auction. As the reigning champions, we must work harder this year to retain our title, as nothing is guaranteed."
He added, "Last year, we were seen as underdogs, but now we carry the champion's label. We aim to create a supportive environment for the team, allowing everyone to perform at their best."
Emerging Talent Showcase
The tournament will feature eight teams, each playing five league matches, with the top four advancing to the semi-finals on June 11.
In addition to established players, the league will serve as a significant platform for rising stars like Ayush Mhatre, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Musheer Khan, Suryansh Shedge, and Abhigyan Kundu.
Lad highlighted promising young players from his squad, stating, "Arjun Dani shows great potential, Pratik Shukla is impressive, and Sahil Jadhav was a key player for us last year. We have a balanced team, and those who thrive under pressure will shine."
Importance of the T20 Mumbai League
The T20 Mumbai League has been instrumental in nurturing talent for the IPL and Indian cricket, including power-hitter Shivam Dube, a two-time T20 World Cup champion. Dube noted the league's significance as a pathway to greater opportunities.
"The excitement for the T20 Mumbai League is palpable. It serves as a major platform for players, with many IPL teams and scouts observing closely. To secure a spot in the Mumbai domestic cricket team, impressing them is crucial," Lad remarked. He emphasized the need for players to balance aggression with composure to perform effectively.
Launch of T20 Mumbai Women's League
The 2026 edition will also introduce the inaugural T20 Mumbai Women's League, featuring three teams: SoBo Mumbai Falcons, Thane Sky Risers, and Aakash Tigers Mumbai Western Suburbs. The women's league kicks off on June 2, with Thane Sky Risers, led by Saima Thakor, facing off against SoBo Mumbai Falcons, captained by Sayali Satghare.
Exciting players such as Humairaa Kaazi, teenage sensation Ira Jadhav, Simran Shaikh, Sanika Chalke, and Vrushali Bhagat will participate. Lad commended the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) for this initiative, calling it a significant advancement for women's cricket in the city.
Learning from Experienced Players
Tushar Deshpande, currently with Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2026 and a veteran of six IPL seasons, is part of the MSC Maratha Royals. Lad stressed the importance of having seasoned professionals like Deshpande in the team, as young players can learn valuable lessons from their routines.
"Team bonding is crucial. Observing players like Tushar, who has extensive IPL experience, can teach youngsters a lot. I encourage them to pay attention to how established players prepare for games," he stated.
Reflecting on his own experience with the Mumbai Indians, where he played only one match in five years, Lad noted, "I learned a great deal by watching professional players and their preparations, which benefited me in the Ranji Trophy."
Season Kickoff
The MSC Maratha Royals will begin their campaign against Aakash Tigers Mumbai Western Suburbs on June 1. All matches, including those of the women's league, will be held at the iconic Wankhede Stadium.
