Mumbai Police Addresses Viral Video Controversy

On Friday, the Mumbai Police dismissed allegations regarding a viral video that purportedly shows an officer in plain clothes mistreating a woman during a protest. According to the police, the officer was actually attempting to apprehend a male protester when the woman inadvertently stepped into the scene. Following the sharing of the clip by Congress MP Varsha Gaikwad on social media, the police clarified that the interpretation of the incident was misleading. Amidst the political uproar surrounding the video, the Mumbai Police took to social media to refute the claims, stating that the behavior of their personnel was being irresponsibly misrepresented. In response to Gaikwad's post, the police explained that a male officer was focused on detaining a male protester when a female protester accidentally came between them.

In her post, Gaikwad questioned the Mumbai Police's conduct, asking, "What kind of behavior is this? Why is a male officer treating a young female protester in such a manner? Why isn't he allowing his female colleagues to handle the situation? What actions will be taken against him? This is unacceptable." She also tagged Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in her remarks. In response, the Mumbai Police urged her to recognize that the incident was being misinterpreted. They emphasized that while maintaining law and order, an officer was trying to detain a male protester when a woman inadvertently came into their line of sight, as the officer was looking in another direction. The police force stated, "As a public figure, it is expected that you verify facts before drawing conclusions based on a video. Senior officials have confirmed all facts and have closely examined the video to ascertain the truth."

Amid the backlash regarding the clip, NCP (SP) leader Rohit Pawar has also called for action against the male police officer involved. So far, no formal complaint has been filed regarding these allegations. On Thursday, students and activists protested at Shivaji Park in Dadar, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, after which the police dispersed them, leading to some young individuals falling during the scuffle.
