Mumbai, April 28: A 31-year-old individual has been detained following a brutal attack on two security personnel in the Naya Nagar region of Mumbai. The suspect reportedly questioned their religious beliefs before assaulting them with a knife, raising concerns about a potential lone wolf attack.
Details of the Assault
As per law enforcement officials, the suspect, identified as Zaib Zuber Ansari, approached the guards at an under-construction site near Wockhardt Hospital around 4 A.M. on Monday. He allegedly demanded they recite the Kalma, a significant Islamic declaration, before he initiated the attack.
Victims and Response
The victims, Rajkumar Mishra and Subroto Sen, suffered severe injuries and were taken to a local hospital for treatment. Mishra managed to reach the hospital independently, while Sen was helped by a passerby, Nayab Sheikh.
Nayab Sheikh, who was on his way home from work, noticed Sen injured and hiding in the guard booth. He promptly took him to the police station and ensured he received medical care.
Swift Police Action
Following the attack, police quickly reviewed CCTV footage from the vicinity to track down the suspect. Ansari was apprehended within about 90 minutes of the incident and was taken to the Naya Nagar Police Station, where charges of attempted murder and inciting communal discord were filed against him.
Legal Proceedings
After his arrest, Ansari was presented in a Thane court, which ordered him to remain in police custody until May 4.
Ongoing Investigation
The investigation is being conducted by local police in collaboration with the state Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS). Authorities are analyzing electronic devices seized from Ansari to ascertain whether this incident was an isolated case or part of a larger scheme. Initial findings indicate the presence of notes referencing terms such as “ISIS,” “lone wolf,” “jihad,” and “Gaza.”
Background of the Suspect
Reports suggest that Ansari lived in the United States for several years, with family members still residing there. He returned to India after struggling to secure employment abroad.
Currently, he resides alone in the Mira Road area and conducts online chemistry classes for income.
Authorities suspect that he may have been radicalized by online materials.
