Mumbai Indians' Coach Defends Bumrah Amid Struggles in IPL Season
Bumrah's Performance Under Scrutiny
After the Mumbai Indians (MI) faced defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), the team's batting coach expressed support for struggling pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah, urging fans to be patient with him during this challenging season.
Despite MI still being mathematically in the tournament, their situation has worsened with a sixth loss. Bumrah's performance has been particularly disappointing, as he has only claimed two wickets in eight matches, with an average of 132.00, an economy rate of 8.80, and a strike rate of 90.0. This marks Bumrah's least effective IPL season to date. In a match where MI defended 244 runs, he conceded 54 runs in four overs, including five sixes, one of which was a remarkable no-look shot by uncapped Punjab player Salil Arora.
Pollard Stands by Bumrah
In the post-match press conference, Pollard highlighted the importance of acknowledging Bumrah's past contributions to MI and the Indian team, especially during tough times. He emphasized that every player is entitled to experience off days and that fans should remember Bumrah's achievements.
"When a player struggles, we scrutinize every detail. Bumrah has been a top performer for years, and while he may not be at his best right now, he deserves some understanding. Everyone has bad days, and we must not forget his past successes. He will return to form and earn the cheers of 'Bumrah, Bumrah' from fans, both for MI and India," Pollard stated.
Refusing to Accept Defeat
Pollard candidly addressed MI's challenges in executing a complete game of cricket this season. Despite the team's struggles, he reassured that the players are determined to fight and have not given up, even after losing six out of eight matches. With six games remaining, MI still has a chance to accumulate a maximum of 16 points if they can secure victories in their upcoming matches.
"We haven't been as consistent as we hoped, and the results reflect that. Collectively, we need to improve. We must play a complete game to win. The players are eager to fight, and while we've faced losses, we haven't accepted defeat. Mathematically, we are still in the tournament, and we are looking for ways to improve and advance further," he concluded.
