Mumbai Indians' Auction Strategy Revealed by Jhulan Goswami
Insights from the WPL 2026 Mega Auction
Jhulan Goswami, the bowling coach and mentor for the Mumbai Indians (MI), shared insights into the franchise's approach during the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2026 mega auction held on November 27. She emphasized the significance of continuity, strategic acquisitions, and the pivotal role of skipper Harmanpreet Kaur throughout the auction process. The Mumbai Indians successfully brought back several key players, including Amelia Kerr, Sajeevan Sajana, Saika Ishaque, and Shabnim Ismail, after previously releasing them.
MI's Straightforward Auction Approach
In an interview on JioHotstar, Jhulan explained that the team's auction strategy was centered around keeping their core group intact, which has been instrumental in securing two championships over the past three years. She stated, "Our main goal was to maintain our strong support group of players. This strategy has been crucial to our success in winning two championships in the last three years. That was the fundamental plan, nothing more."
The Essential Role of Harmanpreet Kaur
Jhulan highlighted the importance of Captain Harmanpreet Kaur's contributions during the auction, noting that her leadership was vital in retaining the team's core players, with the coaching staff backing her decisions both on and off the field. Under Harmanpreet's captaincy, MI clinched the inaugural WPL title in 2023 and followed it up with another championship in 2025. "Harman's insights are always critical during auction planning. Ultimately, she leads this team and has achieved remarkable success. Her input was the most significant aspect of the auction process. Our role is to support her on and off the field. Having her at the auction table was a tremendous advantage, and her thoughts were invaluable in helping us retain the core of this team," the former Indian pacer remarked.
Notable Player Acquisitions
Jhulan further noted that acquiring Amelia Kerr and Shabnim Ismail was a strategic move that added both balance and experience to the team. "Amelia Kerr was an outstanding acquisition. She brings a lot of variation, volume, and balance to our squad. Over the past three years, she has excelled in the tournament, and as an all-rounder, she is crucial for us. Additionally, Shabnim Ismail was another fantastic buy. We were pleasantly surprised to secure her at such a low price, as we anticipated she would command a much higher bid. From a budget standpoint, our planning proved effective," Jhulan concluded.
