Mumbai, April 25: In a disturbing case of vengeance that has unfolded over nearly three decades, the Mumbai Crime Branch has apprehended a 29-year-old man along with an accomplice for the alleged murder of a 78-year-old individual, suspected of being an informant in a police encounter from 1999.

Authorities report that the primary suspect, Shadiq Jawar, is related to the late gangster Shadiq Kalia, who met his end in a police encounter in 1999.

It is alleged that Jawar orchestrated the murder of Iqbal Ibrahim Celia, believing he had tipped off law enforcement about his uncle's location during that time.

Investigators assert that Celia had provided information to encounter specialist Daya Nayak, which ultimately led to Kalia's demise.

Motivated by this conviction, Jawar is accused of plotting the murder as an act of retribution.

The tragic event took place on the evening of April 20 at Celia's home in Nagpada, Mumbai.

According to police reports, the assailants entered the residence when other family members were absent and brutally attacked the elderly man with sharp weapons, inflicting over 20 wounds. Celia's wife and son discovered his lifeless body upon returning home.

After the crime, the suspects fled the scene.

However, investigators utilized CCTV footage to trace their escape route.

The Mumbai Crime Branch disclosed that the pair traveled through Antop Hill and Vidyavihar to Kalyan before heading to Nagpur.

Using technical surveillance and gathered evidence, police teams successfully located and arrested Jawar and his 22-year-old accomplice, Naushad Mithani, in Nagpur.

During interrogation, both Jawar and Mithani reportedly admitted to their roles in the murder.

Records indicate that Kalia was previously a street vendor in Kalachowki, Mumbai, before becoming involved in the underworld and associating with Chhota Shakeel's gang. He was killed during a police operation in November 1999.

Officials noted that Jawar was just two years old when his uncle was killed but allegedly grew up with a desire for vengeance.

Investigations into this case are ongoing.
