MTB Shimla Begins

The 13th edition of the MTB Shimla mountain biking event launched in Shimla on Friday, with K.K. Pant, the Chief Secretary of Himachal Pradesh, flagging off 72 cyclists from 20 different cities across India. This multi-day event aims to promote mountain biking, adventure tourism, and eco-friendly travel in Himachal Pradesh, while inspiring children and youth to engage in outdoor sports and maintain healthy lifestyles.

Event Highlights

The event commenced with a 16-km heritage ride through Shimla, followed by a rigorous mountain biking course over the next two days. The competitive route spans approximately 130 km, featuring 110 km of timed racing that challenges riders' endurance, technical skills, and ability to navigate tough mountain terrain. Participants range in age from 11 to 68, showcasing the sport's appeal across generations. The winners will be honored as the 'King of Shivaliks,' with the awards ceremony set for the evening of October 25.

Government's Vision for Adventure Tourism

In a statement to the press, K.K. Pant emphasized that mountain biking aligns with the state government's goal of fostering green, tourist-friendly, and responsible tourism. He noted that adventure sports allow visitors to appreciate Himachal Pradesh's natural beauty, local traditions, and culture while promoting eco-conscious travel. 'Mountain biking is an enjoyable adventure sport that resonates with our vision for a green and welcoming Himachal Pradesh, where visitors can responsibly engage with our customs and culture,' Pant remarked.

Addressing Substance Abuse Through Sports

The Chief Secretary highlighted the importance of providing youth with constructive outlets for their energy, particularly as the government combats substance abuse. In response to concerns about young people being drawn to drugs and excessive screen time, Pant advocated for sports, music, and other recreational activities as positive alternatives. 'To steer children away from harmful habits, we must offer them opportunities in sports, music, or other enjoyable activities,' he stated.

Pant further mentioned that the government is investing in sports, including adventure sports, as part of its strategy to counteract drug abuse. 'Young people possess abundant energy and enthusiasm that needs to be channeled positively. We are promoting sports and adventure activities as a means to combat drug-related tendencies,' he added.

Himachal Pradesh: A Future Adventure Hub

Discussing Himachal Pradesh's potential as a premier destination for eco-friendly adventure tourism, Pant remarked that the state and the broader Himalayan region offer natural landscapes and challenging terrains comparable to those found in Europe. 'This is already evident. Today's event exemplifies this. The terrain, natural beauty, and challenges for adventure sports in Himachal Pradesh and the Himalayas are on par with Europe. We have tremendous potential,' he asserted. He noted that while the state is starting from a modest base, adventure tourism is expected to flourish in the coming years. 'Europe does not provide the same opportunities and experiences that visitors can find in Himachal Pradesh and the Himalayas. The future belongs to Himachal and the Himalayas,' Pant concluded.

Insights from Participants

Suraj Lama, a participant from Guwahati currently residing in Noida, expressed excitement about his first MTB Shimla race, anticipating the challenges ahead. 'This two-stage race will test our endurance and technical skills due to the difficult terrain and obstacles. I'm thrilled to participate,' he shared.

Lama, who has previously competed in several races and achieved podium finishes, aims to perform at his best and secure a podium position if possible. He encouraged young people to focus on their health and avoid narcotics. 'Be proactive about your health and well-being, steer clear of narcotics, and adopt a healthy lifestyle,' he advised. He commended the organizers for their professionalism and expressed hope that this event would become a staple in his racing calendar.

Encouraging Women in Cycling

The event has also seen increased participation from women riders, emphasizing the importance of encouraging girls to engage in mountain biking and other outdoor sports. Anjali, a participant from Chandigarh, shared her enthusiasm for her first MTB Shimla experience, highlighting the sport's challenges and benefits. 'Mountain biking is demanding but rewarding. I believe every child should try MTB Shimla. Cycling promotes fitness and health,' she stated.

Anjali emphasized the role of schools and educators in introducing children to cycling and sports to help them avoid drugs and negative influences. 'Teachers should inform children about cycling and other sports to keep them away from drugs and smoking. Awareness is crucial,' she noted. She expressed her passion for mountain biking, which she discovered at school, and encouraged more girls to take up the sport. 'The thrill of MTB is unique. Cycling is an exciting way to stay fit and healthy,' she concluded.
