Mohammed Kaif Defends Rishabh Pant Amid Captaincy Changes
Kaif Supports Pant, Critiques Selector Decisions
Former Indian cricketer Mohammed Kaif has come to the defense of wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, asserting that his removal from the captaincy in both Test and white-ball formats was unwarranted. Despite a disappointing IPL season with the Lucknow Super Giants, Kaif emphasized that Pant remains one of India's most significant match-winners in Test cricket.
In a discussion on JioStar, Kaif remarked, "Rishabh Pant has not done anything wrong. The formats of red-ball and white-ball cricket are distinct. Judging him solely on his IPL performance, where his team has struggled, overlooks his capabilities as a Test batter."
During the current IPL season, Pant has faced challenges, accumulating only 286 runs across 12 innings, averaging 28.60 with a strike rate exceeding 140, and achieving just one half-century. His team is currently at the bottom of the points table, having secured only four victories in 13 matches, thus missing out on playoff contention.
Kaif also raised concerns about the selectors' consistency, questioning why Aquib Nabi, a promising pace bowler from Jammu and Kashmir, has not been selected despite his strong performances in the Ranji Trophy. He pointed out the inconsistency in the treatment of players based on age, citing the case of 34-year-old KL Rahul still being included while 35-year-old Mohammed Shami was overlooked due to age considerations.
"KL Rahul is 34 years old. On one hand, you do not pick Mohammed Shami, citing age as a factor, yet KL remains in the squad. I urge the selectors to maintain consistency in their decisions. Performance should dictate selection, regardless of age, and Rishabh Pant deserved to retain his vice-captaincy," Kaif concluded.
